Animals and/or Demons in Jewish Culture: A Guided Tour of the Tanchum Kaplan Exhibition

Join us on 4 November at 5 pm at the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania for a closing tour of the exhibition “Tanchum Kaplan. From Words to Images.” The tour will be led by Dr Lara Lempertienė, Head of the Judaica Research Centre.

Animals have long held an important place in Jewish literature, folklore and visual art. Their roles range from familiar creatures friendly to humans to demonic beings with animal features. Sometimes these roles overlap or even reverse.

Artist Tanchum Kaplan was well acquainted with animal imagery in Jewish literature, book illustrations, synagogue decoration and tombstone symbolism. His work offers a distinctive interpretation of this rich tradition and its many layers of meaning. The tour will introduce visitors to the animal world of Jewish tradition and explore its artistic expression in Kaplan’s lithographs.

Date and time: 4 November 2026, 5–6 pm.
Venue: Fifth-floor atrium, Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania, Gedimino pr. 51, Vilnius.
Registration: Advance registration is required by email at rasa.stakauskaite@lnb.lt.
